The Preacher asked, "Would anyone like to say
A few words about this cowhand's life?"
"I'm sure it would be some comfort
To his family and grieving wife."

They all sat there silent
Hoping the right words would soon come,
When an old, stooped over cowboy said,
"Maybe I can comfort them some."

He slowly walked to the table
Where an old pair of boots lay,
Said, "These may look a little rough,"
"But they were good ones in their day."

"They barely resemble the craftsman's creation
Of those many long years' past,
But they were made with love and care
And certainly built to last."

"The once colorful stitching
Is long faded with age,
But they tell this cowhand's story
Like the words on a book's page.

"The cracks near the toes
Tell of the many times he kneeled to pray,
Giving thanks to the Lord
And asking for a little help along life's way."

"The scrapes and the scuffs
Come from years of riding herd,
While taking care of his family
And trusting in the word."

"The holes in the soles... well...
That just means the movies lied,
'Cause everybody knows
That cowboy don't always ride."

"Now Heaven knows these boots weren't made
For dancin', gotta make that point clear,
But they waltzed his darlin' on her birthday
Each and every year."

"Yessir, these boots were a big part
Of this cowhand's life,
You see, they were given to him on his weddin' day
By his lovin' wife."

Then he slowly turned and gently placed
The boots near his friend where he lay,
Said, "It's only right that they go with him
On his Judgment Day."

"Could be the Good Lord might need an Angel
To ride herd in Heaven for awhile,
'Cause boots like these and men like this
Never go out of style."
